Will a City Pay For Tree Service?
If you have a tree planted near power lines or any other utility line, there may come a day where you get notification saying that something needs to be done. In some cases, a tree may grow too tall and pose a threat to these lines. When that happens, tree service becomes necessary, but will the city pay for it?
The short answer is a solid “no, but” as in that they won’t pay for it, but they will trim it for you. When a tree grows too close to power lines, if you do not take action, the city will. They will trim the tree away from the power lines in the simplest and quickest way possible. However, this is usually either the ugliest or unhealthiest for the tree as well.
Often, city tree trimming to protect the utilities is simply just topping the tree. This leaves the canopy dangerously exposed to the sun and often takes a huge amount of nutrients to recover from. Unfortunately, by the time it recovers, the city will likely come and just top it again.
So while the city won’t pay for tree service, they will do it themselves and sometimes will do it very poorly. This is why it is extra important that if you have a tree even remotely close to power lines, you want to get it serviced yourself. A tree care service will not only keep the tree from growing any closer to the power lines, but it will trim the tree in such a way that it remains both shapely and healthy. This really is a case of you get what you pay for since you actually have to pay for regular service.
