Did the February 2021 Freeze Affect Your Landscaping?
A little more than a year after the harsh weather event that covered the North Texas area, you may be seeing how much damage your landscaping sustained from the freezing temperatures and gusting winds. The widespread freeze of February 2021 resulted in more than 5 days of below-freezing temperatures as well as 24 hours of wicked wind gusts that caused power outages, burst pipes, and some immediate damage to plants and trees. The second day of the freeze, in particular, was a combination of below-freezing temps and damaging gusts that was particularly deadly for plants and trees and likely caused the most harm.
Some of the damage to your landscaping, though, may not have become fully apparent until the new growing season. Advanced Tree & Shrub Care is seeing longer-lasting damage to:
- Trees which held their leaves through the dormant season. These sustained damage to the exposed leaves, which affected their growth throughout last year and into this year.
- Plants that acquired excessive exposure. Despite your best efforts to protect your landscaping, some plants were unable to be covered or were in areas that were more open and unprotected. These took the full force of the winter storms.
- Tropical plants. Plants that normally do quite well in our zone experienced temperatures unusual for this area and either died off, or have been unable to fully recover from the damage. Remarkably, some palm trees have survived, but most were not so lucky.
